Batman star Christian Bale has visited survivors of the Colorado cinema shooting.

The star, who plays Batman in The Dark Knight Rises, thanked medical staff and police who responded to the attack.

Bale also stopped at a makeshift memorial to the victims near the cinema with his wife Sandra Blazic.

James Holmes, 24, is accused of killing 12 people and injuring 58 others at a midnight showing of the new Batman film last Friday.

He could face the death penalty if found guilty.

A judge has ruled that cameras will be banned from next week’s hearing when Holmes is due to be formally charged.

His first court appearance on Monday was filmed, despite protests from his defence team.
‘Horror’

Bale thanked staff at two hospitals where victims were taken after the shootings.

An online campaign had urged the star to visit survivors of the attack.

A Warner Bros. spokeswoman told The Denver Post that Bale was representing himself, not the film studio.

The Oscar-winning actor also issued a written statement saying: “Words cannot express the horror that I feel.

“I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them.”

US President Barack Obama and members of the Denver Broncos American football team have also made hospital visits to some of the survivors.
