“I will always do what I believe is in the best interest of Evan’s well being,” Carrey said in a statement, responding to McCarthy’s criticism. “It’s unfortunate that Evan’s privacy is not being considered. I love Evan very much and will miss him always.”

McCarthy made her comments on “The Howard Stern Show” on Monday and said that the 50-year-old comedian refused to maintain a relationship with Evan, whose father is actor John Mallory Asher, Who McCarthy divorced in 2005 after six years of marriage.

“This isn’t about you and Jim anymore,” Howard Stern told McCarthy. “He almost became like a father and especially with an autistic kid, they develop an attachment.”

“I’ve tried to ask numerous times [for Carrey to visit Evan],” McCarthy said, adding that she hasn’t reached out to him directly. “My son still asks… almost weekly.”

Carrey and McCarthy broke up in April 2010 after dating for five years. They both posted the news on their Twitter pages. No reason was given for the split.

Around the time of their breakup, Carrey posted a photo of himself with Evan (pictured above) on Twitter, with the caption, “Heaven” and a confused face emoticon. Of the breakup, he Tweeted, “I’m grateful 4 the many blessings we’ve shared and I wish her the very best! S’okay!”

“I think that sometimes people need to take a real break from each other,” McCarthy told Stern. “But I still love him. I think you can love people from a distance and respect him. But as a mother, you just hope when you have a relationship with someone it has nothing to do with the child when you break up.”

“I tell [Evan] that someday you’ll cross paths, meet again,” McCarthy said. “It’s hard. He’s been in therapy. It’s a process, he’s working on it.”

McCarthy confirmed last month that she is dating Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher, following months of speculation.

The 39-year-old actress, TV host and former Playboy Playmate landed her own VH1 talk series, called “The Jenny McCarthy Show,” which is set to debut later this year. She is also hosting the NBC competition series “Love in the Wild,” which is set to premiere on June 7 at 8 p.m. on NBC.
