Samuel L. Jackson signs on for ‘RoboCop’ remake

Samuel L. Jackson has signed on to join the cast of the upcoming “RoboCop” remake.

Jackson is slated to portray Pat Novak, a charismatic media mogul, the actor’s rep confirmed to OnTheRedCarpet.com. Joel Kinnaman (“The Killing”) has signed on to star as RoboCop aka police officer Alex Murphy who, after being fatally wounded, is transformed into a cyborg cop.

The original 1987 film starred Peter Weller as Murphy, who turned into RoboCop. Weller also starred in the 1990 sequel. Robert Burke portrayed the character in “RoboCop 3,” which was released in 1993.

The MGM/Sony film has brought Jose Padilha on-board to direct the remake and Gary Oldman previously joined the cast as the scientist behind the creation of Robocop.

According to Deadline, “Limitless” actress Abbie Cornish is in talks to take the female lead in the film, portraying Robocop’s wife who believes she is a widow. Her rep had no immediate response.

Jackson is best known for his roles in films like “Pulp Fiction,” “The Incredibles,” “Unbreakable” and “Shaft.” He is currently filming Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained,” which saw the release of a trailer this week.

The 63-year-old actor recently portrayed Nick Fury in the hugely popular movie, “The Avengers.” He is slated to reprise the role in “Captain America 2,” which is due out in 2014.
