Children will soon be able to get a tablet from film animators DreamWorks, creators of the hugely popular Shrek and Madagascar films.

DreamWorks has partnered with Fuhu, the company that makes Toys R Us’ Nabi tablets, to produce an Android tablet for kids.

The 8-inch Dreamtab will cost “under $300,” according to the New York Times, and will feature regularly updated original content based on DreamWorks characters.

The content will be tailored for tablets, and will automatically arrive on Dreamtabs ready for consumption.

Unlike many mobile games based on movie and TV, the content isn’t being created by a third-party, but instead is being produced in-house.

“By teaming with DreamWorks to create a device that will have original content – original content that is automatically and frequently updated – we are not following consumers, we are getting ahead of them,” said Jim Mitchell, Fuhu’s chief executive.

There will also be drawing lessons from DreamWorks animators, and will come with a professional-level stylus for children to use.

The Dreamtab will arrive “this spring” alongside a range of DreamWorks-branded accessories, including headphones, protective bumpers and carrying cases.

A version with a 12-inch display is apparently also on the way, although the release date is unknown.
