Many 2013 hitmakers like Kanye West and Justin Timberlake were noticeably absent from the annual awards show, despite being nominated.

The stars came out for music’s biggest night, but some of the year’s biggest hit makers were nowhere to be found at the Staples Center on Sunday night.

Despite winning awards at the 56th annual Grammy Awards, both Justin Timberlake and Rihannadid not attend the annual ceremony.

Last year both artists performed, with Rihanna taking the stage in a Bob Marley tribute alongside Sting and Bruno Mars, and Timberlake marking his big comeback to music with a Suit & Tie performance.

This year his song won the Best Music Video award, in addition to Jay Z’s “Holy Grail” for Best Rap-Sung Collaboration, but Jay Z was there alone. Timberlake, 32, is currently in the middle of his 20/20 Experience world tour.

Kanye West was also nominated for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Album, but the notorious anti-Grammys artist boycotted the big event after his “Yeezus” masterpiece was snubbed in the Album of the Year category. West, 36, reportedly spent the day in Malibu with his Kardashian family.

Miley Cyrus performed at Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammys bash on Saturday, which Rihanna also attended, but both starlets apparently skipped the actual show.

Cyrus spent the night at home playing Guitar Hero and then shared her video of tonight’s performance with Twitter followers in response to questions about her absence from the music event. Her album Bangerz was completely snubbed by the Grammys voters, despite its summer sweep.

Meanwhile, Justin Bieber is still in Panama, where the pop star fled and spent the weekend with his team — including singer Usher — after his headline-grabbing arrest on Thursday. The pop star has been snubbed by the Grammys for the past two years and hasn’t attended the show since 2011.

Lady Gaga may have decided not to attend the Grammys after her song ‘Applause’ was snubbed in the Pop categories. Her album ‘ARTPOP’ was released after the Grammys consideration cut-off date.

Lady Gaga was also noticeably missing from the festivities Sunday night, despite performing at the show a year ago. She was in Los Angeles a day earlier performing for Carole King at the MusiCares Gala, but perhaps her Applause snub in the pop category (while Katy Perry’s Roar made it) meant she didn’t want an invite as well.

But at least one celebrity had a good reason for why she didn’t attend. Kelly Clarkson tweeted amusing side commentary throughout the award show, but explained that her pregnancy meant she couldn’t travel.

I couldn’t go 2 the Grammy’s this year because my pregnancy would not allow it, she wrote. Definitely watching from home w/ the kiddos.
