Man accused of murdering ex-girlfriend found dead in jail cell

A 43-year-old Fallbrook man charged with murdering his ex-girlfriend was found dead in his jail cell in an apparent suicide, officials said Sunday.

Michael David Robles, accused in the strangulation of 34-year-old Kathleen Cary Scharbarth of Carlsbad, was found hanged Saturday from a bedsheet in his single-occupancy cell at the San Diego County Jail in Vista, officials said.

Robles was accused of killing Scharbarth on Nov. 23, just minutes after she returned to her home with a new boyfriend. Her teenage daughter was asleep at the home, officials said.

Scharbarth’s body was found buried in a remote canyon. Prosecutors say that after burying Scharbarth, Robles went to a friend’s home for Thanksgiving dinner.

In the days before her death, Scharbarth had filed a domestic violence report against Robles and received a restraining order meant to protect her from him.
