Rihanna caused a Twitter storm after posting a message of support for Palestine to her 36.4million followers from her account on Monday morning.

The tweet simply read: #FreePalestine.

It was removed within eight minutes, but not before it had been retweeted thousands of times and had sparked a flurry of replies.

According to TMZ, sources close to the 26-year-old singer said she never meant to post it.

She didn’t even realise it was a tweet until she started hearing from her fans, a source told the website.

The singer was reading about the Middle East conflict online when she clicked a link, the source says.

Shortly after she then tweeted: Let’s pray for peace and a swift end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict! Is there any hope?…

Rihanna’s not the first famous face to tweet and delete after getting political on the social media site.

In 2012 Kim Kardashian was forced to issue a statement after upsetting people with tweets about Israel and Palestine.

Praying for everyone in Israel, she wrote.

Cue hundreds and thousands of angry replies, with her followers in shock that Kim had accidentally appeared to have taken sides.

Upon realising this, Kim then tweeted: ‘Praying for everyone in Palestine and across the world!’

She later wrote online: “I want to own up to and explain that earlier today I sent out two tweets about saying prayers for the people in Palestine and Israel and after hearing from my followers, I decided to take down the tweets because I realized that some people were offended and hurt by what I said, and for that I apologize.

“I should have pointed out my intentions behind these tweets when I posted them.

The fact is that regardless of religion and political beliefs, there are countless innocent people involved who didn’t choose this, and I pray for all of them and also for a resolution. I also pray for all the other people around the world who are caught in similar crossfires.”

Mirror Online have contacted a spokesperson for the singer for comment.
