U.S. President Barack Obama found himself in an embarrassing situation recently when he had his credit card declined while trying to buy lunch for members of the press at a New York City restaurant last month. The sticky situation unfolded in front of a lot of people, causing Barack to wonder what was going on. He joked to the waitress at the time that he had, indeed, been paying his bills. On Friday, the President explained what actually happened.

“It turned out, I guess I don’t use it enough,” Obama said during an appearance at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Obama went on to say that having the card declined had made him worry that someone had stolen his identity!

They thought there was some fraud going on, he said, according to the CBC. I was trying to explain to the waitress ‘No, I really think that I’ve been paying my bills.’

Obama’s wife, Michelle, used her credit card to pick up the tab for the meal, but the President said the incident made him realize that even he is vulnerable to identity theft.
