It is now thought that the man who died today was from Lithuania.

Declan Sherry, chief executive of site contractor McGee, said: At approximately 4pm today, an incident occurred on the construction site at 20 Grosvenor Square which required an ambulance to be called for two workers who were taken to hospital.

McGee, the contractor responsible for the site, is liaising with the workers’ families. We cannot, therefore, release any further details at this time.

A spokesman for London Ambulance Service said: We were called at 3.43pm to Grosvenor Square to reports of an incident. We sent London Air Ambulance, three of our ambulance crews, three responders in cars, our hazardous area response team and two officers.

Sadly one person, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene by the doctor from the air ambulance. We treated a second patient, a man, for minor injuries and took him to University College Hospital.

The Health and Safety Executive confirmed that it is investigating what happened.

Eyewitnesses said about 20 construction workers could be seen following the accident gathered in the centre of the square.

They were all being spoken to by a manager and were no doubt sent home to be with their loved-ones.

The roads around the building remain closed while police investigate the scene.

It has now been confirmed that the building is 20 Grosvenor Square.

It was being redeveloped into residential accommodation as part of a £250 million renovation.

It is a former US naval headquarters, yards from the US Embassy, and was  originally built as flats in the 1930s.

The building has been vacant since 2007.

It is now believed that a mini-digger fell down from the second floor of the building, Mail Online reported.

It is not yet known if the man who died was on the first floor when it fell or if he was driving the digger.

This building was being redeveloped into potentially some of the most expensive apartments in London.

Recent pictures show the building with scaffolding outside.

Receptionist Salima Cherrad, 26, said she saw construction workers coming out of a building that had scaffolding up.

She said: We saw a helicopter here in Grosvenor Square and we assumed it was something that happened with the guys and the scaffolding.

There were lots of them who came out of the building at the same time and they were all gathering at one spot in the square.

Police were called to the site in Mayfair at 3.45pm this afternoon where the man, who was working on the site and is believed to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead.

At least one other person has been hurt and ambulance staff are at the scene, Scotland Yard said.

Officers have asked members of the public to avoid the area, including anyone planning to go to a demonstration nearby at 6pm.

The force said: Police are advising motorists and the public to avoid the Grosvenor Square area following a partial building collapse.

Police were called at 3.45pm today, Monday, 14 April, to a building site on Grosvenor Square. Officers, London Ambulance Service, London’s Air Ambulance and London Fire Brigade are in attendance.

A man, believed to be in his early 30s, who was working on the site was pronounced dead at the scene. At least one other person has been injured.
