TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State’s Jameis Winston recorded his first base hit of the season last week — but then was picked off — as the Seminoles remained undefeated through six games.
The Heisman Trophy winner continued to show his versatility on the diamond with appearances on the mound, in the field and at the plate. He and the team received an extra day off Sunday when the final game of the weekend series against Georgia was canceled due to weather.
Winston should get a chance to test himself against major leaguers when Florida State plays the New York Yankees on Tuesday.
A look at how the 20-year-old sophomore fared last week:
___
IN RELIEF: The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder didn’t have a save opportunity as Florida State won the three games it played last week against Jacksonville and Georgia by a combined score of 30-13. QUOTABLE: “I’m glad that we were able to get him in because he is the kind of guy that wants to compete,” coach Mike Martin told the Tallahassee Democrat after Saturday’s game. “It gave him a chance to compete. And he pitched extremely well. . You could see the slider was very effective for him and the fastball had the usual movement.”
