Debra Messing has officially filed for divorce from her husband of 10 years, Daniel Zelman, six months after she revealed the two had separated.
The two have an 8-year-old son, Roman. In her divorce documents, filed on Tuesday, June 5, Messing stated that she is seeking joint custody of the child as well as spousal and child support, People magazine reported.
The actress currently stars on the NBC musical drama series “Smash” and has been dating co-star Will Chase since at least December, when she announced she and Zelman, 44, were separating and that the decision was mutual. People said her divorce papers state they split officially in February 2010.
Messing, 43, is also known for her role on the long-running comedy series “Will &Amp; Grace.” She will reprise her role as Broadway lyricist Julia Houston on “Smash” for its second season. The series stars “American Idol” alum Katharine McPhee and Broadway star Megan Hilty as rival stage actresses.
Chase, 41, plays Messing’s character’s old love interest, theatre actor Michael Swift. During season 1, the two have an affair, which almost leads her to end her marriage. Chase, Brian D’Arcy James, who plays her husband, Jaime Cepero, who played a conniving theatre assistant and Raza Jaffrey, who played McPhee’s character’s boyfriend, will not be regular cast members on the second season of “Smash,” a source told OnTheRedCarpet.com.
Zelman is an actor, producer and writer who has worked on projects such as the show “Damages.” He and Messing married in September 2000. The two met when they were students at New York University.
