Star named by US movie fans as their choice for the Academy Award
Jennifer Lawrence has been named as the winner of the Best Actress Oscar in a poll of over 1,000 Americans.
The ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ star has long been thought the front runner for the award, but the poll confirms the young actress’ popularity with the US public, as well as that of her main rival Jessica Chastain.
The poll, for Reuters by respected company Ipsos asked 1,586 Americans who they thought would and should win the Oscar for Best Actress, with 15 percent answering Lawrence to each question.
Rumours of a feud between Jen and Jessica Chastain, who came second in the poll with 11 (should) and 10 (would) percent respectively, were scotched by the ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ star who wrote on her Facebook page: “I find it very sad that the media makes up bogus stories about women fighting in this industry.”
BAFTA winer Emmanuelle Riva (‘Amour’) came in behind on 4 percent. If she wins an Oscar on her 86th birthday on February 24, she’ll be the oldest actress ever to take home an Oscar. Also in the running are youngest ever nominee 9-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis (‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’) and Naomi Watts (‘The Impossible’).
However the poll is no where near as unanimous as similar ones for Best Picture and Best Actor, with ‘Lincoln’ and that film’s top actor Daniel Day-Lewis garnering far larger sections of the vote.
Will Jen win? Well she has to be the favourite despite her BAFTA setback, but this poll suggests things may be a little tight.
