Lady Gaga is making a very generous donation to the relief efforts of Hurricane Sandy.
“Today I pledge 1 million dollars to New York & The American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy Relief,” theartist said on her official website. “If it wasn’t for NYC: the Lower Eastside, Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn, I would not be the woman or artist that I am today.”
The 26-year-old singer, who hails from “the big apple,” explained how she’s doing what she can to pay her gratitude in New York’s time of need.
“New York is relentless ambition, a drive to succeed, a place where there is a natural pursuit of diversity through compassion,” she continued. “Please accept this gift on behalf of myself, my parents Joe and Cynthia, and my sister Natali; with our deepest gratitude New York for raising us. Thank you for helping me build my spirit. I will now help you rebuild yours. Sincerely, Lady Gaga and The Germanottas.”
Gaga also utilized her official Twitter account to spread the word, and link to her official website.
“A letter and a gift to New York and the American @RedCross,” she Tweeted on November 7.
Hurricane Sandy ravaged the east coast, taking the lives of many and causing disastrous devastation. Many celebrities, such as Emma Watson, Cyndi Lauper and Russell Crowe, have donated their efforts, songs and money to the devastated areas.
Lauper, 59, suffered an unfortunate personal loss when she received news that her 90-year-old uncle George Stathis died in the storm. The “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” singer dedicated a performance of her hit song “Time after Time” to her late uncle.
The Disney/ABC Television group also took part in the giving, raised more than $16.8 million for the American Red Cross to help the survivors of Hurricane Sandy thanks to its “Day of Giving” on Monday, November 5.
In 2011, Gaga donated $1.5 million to victims of the tsunami and earthquake in Japan through the sale of her “prayer bracelets.” The singer also launched the Born This Way Foundation in March, alongside Oprah and her mother Cynthia Germanotta.
The foundation, which is named after both her second album and debut single off the record, is a nonprofit and deal with “issues like self-confidence, well-being, anti-bullying, mentoring and career development.” The Grammy Award-winning singer is a director of the foundation along with her mother.
