ECOWAS, a regional organization in West Africa, has elected Nigerian President Bola Tinubu as its new head amid heightened uncertainties such as military coups and terrorism in the region.
Mr. Tinubu, who was elected on Sunday to replace Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoko Embalo, called for swift action against security unrest, including terrorism and coups d’état in West Africa, which have reached worrying levels. he said.
West Africa has seen six successful military coups since 2020, causing a decline in democracy in the region.
From the point of view of peace and security, the threat has reached an alarming scale, and urgent action is needed to meet this challenge. In this context, we must remain determined to use all the regional frameworks at our disposal,” he said in a statement on Monday.
President Tinubu pledged to give priority to political stability, peace and security, and regional economic integration within the 16 member ECOWAS.
