State news agency MENA said Gehad el-Haddad, the group’s main English-language spokesman, was arrested Tuesday. State TV said the chief prosecutor had ordered his arrest, but didn’t mention the charges.

El-Haddad was one of the group’s most prolific spokesmen, defending its policies before the ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi at the hands of the military on July 3. Following the coup, which was prompted by massive protests against Morsi, el-Haddad was outspoken about rejecting talks with the new authorities. State media said two other senior Brotherhood members were also arrested alongside el-Haddad in eastern Cairo.
