You might not be convinced with Facebook’s idea of owning two messaging apps, but CEO Zuckerberg finds them to be serving different purposes.

Explaining how the two apps differ from each other, Zuckerberg, in an earnings call with investors, said that while WhatsApp is meant to replace text messages (with the voice calling feature adding to its utility), Messenger is aimed at connecting Facebook friends and providing a richer experience, like the ability to send money over the app.

Messenger is very focused on expression and the whole set of things that fit into the tools around the Messenger platform, said Zuckerberg as quoted by Quartz India.

The company has no plans to merger the two apps.
Facebook, which closed its acquisition of mobile messaging service WhatsApp last year, has no near-term plan to make money from the service.
