Part Time Job

A part time job can show that you have work ethics. You need to have reference from others besides your professors or personal friends. These people can give a boost to you. The part time job can be a few hours a week. Many colleges have on campus work programs where you can earn money.

Internships In Your Field

Interships provide the perfect opportunity to give you training in your field. This is hands on experience that you cannot get in the classroom. It allows you to use what you have learned in books and from teachers and apply it for a company or organization. Some of these may be paid, while others are unpaid. No matter how much you will be compensated, it will look better on your resume as it can provide you with future unpaid rewards.

Volunteering

This is another way to get experience. People that currently work in your field that already have experience may not accept these assignments due to the lack of pay. Since you need to gain as much experience as possible this is an opportunity that you can use on your resume. You can volunteer as many times as you want and with different organizations to get knowledge and experience.

Shadowing With a Mentor

This is one area that students may not take advantage of, but can help to provide them in getting a position after graduation. You work with someone who has more experience and get to see the day to day interactions. They can help answer questions and explain to you many things to avoid. This person may even help you find a job once you graduation as they may have connections. So how can you find a mentor? You do research with people in your field, contact them and see if they are interested in helping you. Some may be pleased that you thought of them and will work with you or direct you to someone who might.

The workforce is getting even more competitive each day. You want to be able to find a job quickly once you graduate. If you have school loans, or other expenses a job can help you pay these off and get started in your career. Obtaining work expereince prior to graduating will only improve your chance of success. Even if you are assured of getting a job without work experience it is in your best interest to get some. There are two reasons. First, you may be able to increase your rate of pay if you have proof of experience. Second, you need to know the day to day realities of the job. You want to know exactly what you are getting into. Many go to school, get a degree, graduate, and then find that they cannot stand the field they are in. This is why it is imperative that you know beforehand.
