MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — A woman who was kidnapped as a child and held captive for 17 days in a suburban New York dungeon says she is sad for the family of her now-dead kidnapper, but she has no sympathy for him.
A New York prison official says John Esposito was found dead in his cell at the Sing Sing prison on Wednesday. Spokeswoman Linda Foglia says the death does not appear to be suspicious.
Esposito was serving 15 years to life for kidnapping Katie Beers and hiding her under his Bay Shore, Long Island, home in 1992.
Beers tells The Associated Press that state officials called her to tell her about Esposito’s death.
She noted the coincidence of his passing one day after notorious Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro committed suicide in prison.
