Nats will honor usher injured in dog attack on children

Last week, I notedthat this man being interviewed about saving some kids from a dog attack in

Northeast D.C. was wearing Nats clothes during the interview.

Readers quickly told me that the man in question was a Nats

employee, who had been saluted during a recent MASN broadcast. Now it turns out that the Nats are planning to honor him in

person.

Andre Hawthorne, an usher at Nats Park, will be on the field during Tuesday’s pre-game ceremonies, and will be

presented with a Nats jersey by team executives, according to a spokeswoman.

Hawthorne was actually coming back from

Nats Park to Trinidad when he saw the attack, which involved “two large, approximately 190-pound dogs,” according to WJLA.

“He was armed with a knife and his courage,” the

station reported. “He can be seen on the tape trying to run the dogs off with his knife. The dogs then turned on him, tossing

him around like a ‘rag doll,’ neighbors described, which allowed the children to flee safely. However, the attack left him

with wounds on his left arm and hand which are now infected, he says. He also is undergoing a series of rabies

shots.”

WUSA reported that a neighbor helped beat the dogs off with a baseball bat after Hawthorne had

distracted them from the children.

“I was bleeding everywhere. I threw my left arm up so he could grip that and used

my right arm to punch on him,” Hawthorne told

WUSA, which like WJLA, has video of the attacks.

Anyhow, if you see him on Tuesday, say hey.
