Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) The 14,699 polling stations set up as part of the combined elections in Burkina Faso, opened Sunday from 6 am to allow about 4.4 million voters registered on the electoral rolls to choose their MPs and city councilors, APA learns in the Burkinabe capital.
Early on Sunday morning, voters flocked to polling centers to cast their ballot. Voting has been going on smoothly for the time being after the head of state Blaise Compaore cast his vote before 7 am.
Some 127 MPs and 18,600 city councilors will be elected among them 351 mayors will be sorted out including 302 elected officials from rural areas.
A total of 74 political parties are vying for the parliamentary and municipal polls. Aside from them, no fewer than a dozen other political formations are enlisted only for the local elections.
More than 8,000 national and international election monitors have been deployed across the country to supervise the polls.
The budget allocated for these elections is estimated at 28 billion CFA francs
