The Frenchman has been offered a new deal and given his word that he will stay, but dropped a curious suggestion that he could yet change his mind.
Arsene Wenger last night admitted he is keeping Arsenal guessing over his future.
Wenger says he has given his word” to the board that he is staying after his contract expires at the end of the season.
But Wenger then kept Arsenal fans dangling after confirming that he wants to see how this season finishes before finally committing himself.
Arsenal fans have become restless after the club fell behind in the title race but Wenger clearly wants to see whether he can secure a top four finish and the FA Cup before signing on for another term.
I told you many times my commitment is not questionable and I have given my word. I always respect my word – it’s as simple as that. I have given my word. My word is my word,” said Wenger.
Then when pressed by Mirror Sport over whether that means he is definitely staying, Wenger added: Yes….unless I decide otherwise.
I have told you many times we have had no time to sit down and do it. Nothing, not going anywhere, don’t worry for that.
But I want to have a feeling coming out of the season that that I have done the maximum for the club.”
Wenger has been offered a new contract but has yet to sign it and it is believed that it could be a two-year deal as Arsenal begin to look to the longer term future.
Wenger, 64, wants to stay but has insisted he wants to be in a position where he can take the club forward, although it is hard to imagine him just walking away in May with no replacement lined up.
But Wenger insisted that he will have no part in choosing his eventual successor.
I always said, and you can check that, everybody [has] his job,” said Wenger. My job is to do well for the team, not to do anything else.
