A man who saved a boy of three from drowning in a canal has received a thank-you card – 37 years later.

Ken Littleboy, 75, was contacted by Peter King, 40, who believed until recently the man who rescued him in 1977 had died.

Mr King, now of Exmouth, Devon, fell in while feeding swans with his sisters in Reading, Berks.

He said the note was very long overdue”.

His hero said: I was in the back garden at the time and could see this little head bobbing up and down, so I jumped over a couple of garden fences and into the water.

He wasn’t breathing when I pulled him out, and I thought he was a goner .

But I turned him over, and water came out of his mouth, and he started breathing.

At the time I didn’t think much about it, but I suppose if I hadn’t pulled him out, he would have drowned.

Mr Littleboy’s heroics are all the more impressive because he is a chronic asthma sufferer.

He did not receive a medal as Mr King suggested he deserved, but he did get some free fish and chips from his local chippy.
