There is certainly no shortage of intriguing pairings, as a number of the threesomes are stacked with potential contenders.

Defending champion Martin Kaymer will play alongside world No. 1 Rory McIlroy and amateur Gunn Yang. Masters champion Jordan Spieth will play alongside Jason Day and 2013 U.S. Open winner Justin Rose. Perhaps most notably, though, Tiger Woods will look to get back on track with Rickie Fowler and Louis Oosthuizen also in tow.

Tiger is searching for his 15th major championship, but he shot the worst round of his career in the third round of the Memorial last week when he carded an 85. After that showing, Woods acknowledged that it was a definite struggle, per PGATour.com:

This is a lonely sport. The manager is not going to come in and bring the righty or bring the lefty. You’ve just got to play through it. And that’s one of the hardest things about the game of golf, and it’s also one of the best things about the game of golf. When you’re on, no one is going to slow you down. When you’re off, no one is going to pick you up, either. It’s one of those sports that’s tough. Deal with it.

Few expect Woods to come out on top due to his recent poor play and the high level of competition he’ll face, but he did make a nice run earlier this season at the Masters before fading.

With Tiger’s saga continuing, Spieth and McIlroy battling for supremacy and so many other storylines to watch, the opening rounds of the 2015 U.S. Open promise to be captivating.
