Why NYC Residents Need To Care About Cardiovascular Health

New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the 7th most populous city in the entire world.  There are literally millions of people who live in the city, and millions who come to visit it each year.  NYC is known for a lot of things, mainly because there is a wealth of opportunity for people in The Big Apple.  The City is known for its thriving fashion and theater industry, unique neighborhoods and even more unique residents.  New York City has inspired hundreds of plays, movies, songs and other creative endeavors. It is also known for its progressive politics and diverse populous.

When people talk about NYC they mention the buildings, the sites, and the people. However, there is one important issue that seems like people aren’t taking seriously; the health of NYC’s residents.  People may make a few witty remarks about soda bans and debate the effectiveness of banning smoking in public parks, but very few reflect on the serious health issues that face New Yorkers.  According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death in New York.  Cardiovascular health should be an important issue for every New Yorker, but few people are talking about it, and even fewer are doing something to improve their health.

Almost every popular public health issue can lead back to cardiovascular health.  Are you concerned about the obesity epidemic that is affecting millions of children and adults in the city?  Obesity puts a lot of strain on the cardiovascular system, and one of the more serious side effects of it is stroke, heart attack and other cardio vascular issues.  Do you want people to stop smoking in public areas and near schools?  Lungs aren’t the only vital human organs that are affected by cigarette smoke; the cardiovascular system also takes a bad beating when people smoke.  Are you concerned about the amount of pollution in the city?  Just like with cigarette smoke, pollution can cause some major cardiovascular problems.

The American Heart Association’s tips won’t just improve the health of your heart, but also improve your health overall.  When you’re going through your day to day activities, remember to keep these essential things in mind:

  • Get active
  • Control cholesterol
  • Eat Better
  • Manage blood pressure
  • Lose weight
  • Reduce blood sugar
  • Stop smoking

As you can see, cardiovascular health isn’t just a “niche” health issue; it’s an important health factor that affects millions of NYC residents.  The health of your body is very dependent on the health of your heart, and it looks like NYC residents and even New York state residents need to be doing more to keep their hearts healthy.  NYC cardiology and cardiologic health are important, and regular check-ups with your doctor and a NYC cardiologist can help keep you healthy.  The American Heart Association has an easy to understand system for keeping your heart healthy called Life’s Simple Seven.  Following these guidelines can help greatly reduce your risk for common cardiovascular problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart failure, heart attacks, and more.
