WhatsApp Gets Passkey Support soon
There are a number of apps and websites that have already announced passkey support, but WhatsApp could be next. Meta hasn’t announced anything yet, but to the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.17.5 update, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on passkey support for a future update of the app. You’ll see a message that says, “You can now use your fingerprint, face, or screen lock to verify your identity and that you have a passkey.”
Unfortunately this feature appears to be under development and there is no way to enable it. However, this is a strong indication that WhatsApp users may soon have the option to protect their accounts with passkeys instead of traditional passwords.
For those who don’t know, Passkey is an industry-wide effort to create a more secure authentication system. Instead of traditional passwords, users can now log in using facial recognition or biometrics without having to create and enter a regular passcode.
